July 31

Today's post is earlier than usual because we are going camping and won't have a computer or internet access. In any case, this photograph summarizes the day. Our bicycles are finally completing their long awaited pilgrimage to Mackinac Island.

This train bomber's pseudonym has made me laugh for a while now.

July 29

Ellen and I went fishing tonight. She caught a small bluegill and I caught a healthy amount of seaweed.

July 28

This gelatinous blob is a bryozoa. Bryozoans are aquatic, freshwater moss animals that live in colonies like this one. Ellen and I both thought it was a cluster of fish eggs until we looked it up online.

July 27

Ellen's mom and brother have been maintaining a small garden this summer. Ellen pulled this carrot to check their progress.

July 26

Today there was a break in the rain so Ellen and I went on a short walk through the woods. This is one of a couple of panoramas I made.

July 25

Today we spent a few hours at Mackinac Island. It is one of my favorite places in Michigan because it doesn't allow cars-only bicycles and horse drawn carriages. However, we didn't ride our bikes around this time because we anticipated bad weather. Ellen and I will be going back so I can do a time lapse riding around the whole island. That will be a post to look forward to.

July 24

Today I figured out how to mount my camera to my bicycle so I can do better bike ride time-lapse videos. This was one of my test runs. The video is comprised of 1,038 photographs. It is called "Ice Cream Break."

This is a lot of propane tanks at Stanley Fuel Gas & Oil Co. in Clare, MI. It is near the building where we work.

July 22

Yesterday Ellen's dad killed a wasp that was by a window near her desk. Today we were looking at it and saw that its back end was stuck to the window by a glob of dried venom.

July 21

Today I was able to shoot a new subject that moved into the studio yesterday. This will be a fun one to work with for the next little bit.

July 20

Today we went to a family reunion at Lake Missaukee. We hung out on the beach for a bit and built some cool sand castles with moats. After dinner there wasn't much left of them.

This is Ellen's brother's pet turtle, Turtle. He is pretty friendly and will stare at you through his tank all day. Today was the first time I saw him eat a live fish. It was probably one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.

July 18

Since spring was a bit cooler than usual, blueberry season was pushed back and picking started yesterday. We went out today and stocked up for a couple weeks. We will definitely be out again soon.

Don't let the ominous grease halo fool you. This is by far the best pizza in Michigan. Since we won't be here long, we make it a point to eat Cornerstore Pizza once a week. The best part about eating it once a week is hearing Ellen sing her very simple Cornerstore Pizza song:
Cornerstore Pizza
Is the pizza
For you and me!

July 16

Today we had a pretty big photo shoot for Rogers Athletic. Ellen was very helpful as our production manager/stylist. Here she is taking a break/getting a sunburn.

July 15

Today at work I spent a few hours in the manufacturing department doing environmental portraits of employees. This is not one of the portraits. It is just something extra I was able to shoot on the side.

July 14

Ellen's brother built a rail so we would have something to skate at the building where we work. Today was the first day we broke it out. This is me. I set up the camera and Ellen's brother pulled the trigger.

This is a slide in the woods near the house. It is an old little elephant.

July 12

Today Ellen and I were pleased to discover that our pregnant onion plant is producing its first baby bulb. They grow up so fast.

July 11

Today we went to Traverse City, Michigan for the National Cherry Festival. One thing we didn't expect to see was a canine long-jumping competition. We saw a dog jump over 23 feet. It was pretty spectacular.

This is the bakery in the town where we work. Apparently it was going out of business until the Clare County Police Department rallied to buy and save it. This can only strengthen the cop-donut stereotype. Their donuts are amazing, nonetheless.

July 09

The other day one of the legs on the dock fell out and is pending repair. Ellen and I tried to tape off a safe walkway so no one would fall to an untimely, watery death. There were a few close calls today. Obviously the X's we put on the dangerous sections aren't enough of a warning.

July 08

Today we had a Roger's Athletic photo shoot. From mid-May until now we have been planning how to reshoot some of the football equipment for advertising and catalog use. This was the first of several shoots we have scheduled throughout this month. I probably shot close to 700 images. After we completed our shot list I was able to take out my camera and document some of the shoot. This was our trusty octo-bank that survived the wind and gave us some of the light effects we wanted.

July 07

This is the backside of one of the buildings where we work. Ellen and I have ridden our bikes by this spot several times. I like all the filled in windows and missing doors.

July 06

Locker in the bathroom at work. Not much to explain.

Sunday, July 5, 2009

July 05

Today we mostly relaxed. However, we exercised our minds by playing the Charlie Harper Memory Game.

July 04

This is Ellen's $0.99 inflatable dolphin with whom she has happily swam for the past two years. Today while swimming we discovered two puncture wounds that may prove to be fatal. It will be missed.

July 03

On our day off today we visited Frankenmuth, Michigan. There were a few long longhorn cows in a field behind Bronner's, the world's largest Christmas store. This calf was Ellen's favorite of the bunch.

July 02

Today after work Ellen and I were walking behind the building we work in and saw a garter snake cruising around a pile of old railroad junk. We tried to catch it but it found a way underneath some immovable rails. Here we are waiting it out.

July 01

I am going to try my hand at a photo-a-day/daily photo journal type thing. I have wanted to try it for a while but have never committed to it. I want it to last at least through the month of July. Now we will see how disciplined I am. This first image was made inside at home today. It is rainy and cool, so Ellen and I spent the evening indoors.
